Garforth Town 5-1 Brigg Town FC CIC

This was by far Brigg Town’s toughest match of the season so far. A depleted Zebras side have absolutely no shame in losing to a higher team.

After a promising start Brigg were rewarded with the first goal. It came when Scott Phillips fired home after good build-up play involving Josh Batty, Dayle Hutson and Conner Harman.

Although Brigg continued to press for the duration of the first half, Garforth Town looked sharp on the break with Duke Witter and James Burgess always being a major threat.

As half-time approached, the Miners got their equalizing goal. Following a swift counter-attack Witter advanced into the penalty area before finding the bottom corner of the net.

That goal just before the half-time whistle was a bitter blow and the game was turned on its head early in the second half.

Witter’s attempted shot from outside the box went straight to James Burgess, who scored from close range.

From then on, Garforth took total control with Burgess netting his second minutes later. On that occasion the striker ran onto a ball over the top and cut inside to find the bottom corner.

If it wasn’t already game over it was when Matt Antcliff latched onto goalkeeper Toby Wells’ free kick to bag a fourth goal for the hosts.

Afterwards, Lee Turner’s late penalty rubbed salt into the wound making the final score 5-1 to Garforth.

The Miners played very well on the night – best of luck to them in the next round. Brigg tried their hardest, but it was always going to be fiendishly difficult with several key players missing.

The Zebras hope to bounce back in Saturday’s league clash with Rossington Main.
