The Robins began with a free kick played into the Brigg penalty area but this was headed clear for Alfie Usher who quickly advanced up the pitch to send a shot high and wide of the Selby goal.
Liam Love, operating mainly on the left, proved to be a major threat for the Brigg defence but his first solo run down the wing was halted before reaching the penalty area. Dean McCarthy then made progress down the right for Brigg and his powerful shot was blocked by James Danby, who needed attention for the injury he sustained.
The Zebras scored the opening goal after nine minutes when the Selby defence failed to deal with an Alfie Usher inswinging corner allowing Steve McCarron to run on to the loose ball to guide it into the net.
Selby responded by pushing forward, ending with Hill holding on to another powerful strike.
Love threatened again with a run down the left wing but his cross was safely held by Hill.
A minute later, he showed up again but Brigg were lucky to see his strike hitting the far post before bouncing back into the arms of Hill.
Brigg replied with a neat move on the right wing with some first-touch inter-passing between Prince Haywood and Usher ending in a save by home keeper Burnett.
On twenty-eight minutes, Love advanced into the penalty area again and scored the equalizer with a fine shot across the face of the goal into the far corner of the net.
McCarron, injured in the build-up to Selby’s goal, was unable to continue and had to be replaced by the reliable Chas Fisher.
The Robins had a ten-minute attacking spell and went close to taking the lead when a fierce thirty-yard volley flashed wide of the Brigg goalpost.
Brigg defended well and were back in front three minutes before the break. The goal came from a free kick won by Haywood in the right corner after some good build-up play with Usher. Jack Boswell delivered the ball right into the Robins’ six-yard box for substitute Fisher to tap in from a clever near-post run.
The second half began with a shot from Usher being blocked and the response by Selby continuing to come from Love down the left wing.
A goal-mouth scramble was eventually cleared by the home team defenders as play went end to end in an entertaining game.
Robbie Start made a headed goal-line clearance to prevent another Selby scoring effort.
Selby were denied an equalising goal in the seventy-eighth minute by a great fingertip save by Hill, who handled well and confidently throughout the game.
The nearest Brigg came to increasing their lead was from another strike by Usher which went over the bar but generally both teams defended well.
The win was a result of excellent teamwork throughout the ninety minutes and every player gave their best against an enterprising home side.
Brigg will be back at home next Saturday afternoon when they play Clay Cross Town.
