Brigg Town FC CIC 1-3 Retford FC

The Zebras were left to rue missed first-half chances against Retford.

Defending the Recreation Ground end of the ground in the first half, Brigg began well with an attack down the left wing from which Alfie Usher chipped the ball over the Retford crossbar.

Continuing to enjoy most possession in the opening minutes, Josh Batty’s strike was brilliantly tipped over the bar by the Retford ‘keeper Jon Kennedy.

From the resulting corner, Brigg scored the first goal of the game when Finlay O’Sullivan fired the loose ball into the roof of the net from fifteen yards out on ten minutes.

Another forward pass was just too far for Batty to get a toe on the ball inside the penalty area and then shots from Usher and Batty were saved by Kennedy.

Brigg had the ball in the back of the net again after twenty minutes, but Batty was denied by an offside flag.

After the first quarter of the game, the opponents gradually began to work their way into the game with increasing confidence and possession, with their first shot at goal coming after half an hour of play.

Brigg failed to add to their single goal lead despite chances falling for Usher and Steve McCarron.

In the last attacking move of the first half, Retford scored an equaliser from a counterattacking move down the right wing. The ball was played with pace across the face of Tom Collins’ goal and rebounded off the crossbar, falling neatly for George White to tap in.

Usher and Batty had attempts saved by the goalkeeper so the two teams went into the half time break on level terms.

Gaining confidence from their goal scored in the last minutes of the first half, the visitors continued to gain more possession from the start of the second period onwards and looked increasingly dangerous, with Collins saving at full stretch from White and Baird shooting wide from distance.

It was no surprise when they took the lead for the first time after an hour of play with Liam Dennett headed the ball home from Haydn Goddard’s in-swinging free kick.

Three minutes later, Retford scored a third and decisive goal after the ball was again played in from the left wing for White to finish with a fierce volley from outside the box.

For the remaining quarter of the game, Retford looked comfortable with their lead and apart from one solo effort from Martin Pembleton, Brigg never seriously threatened their opponents’ goal and went down to their second league defeat inside three days.
