Worsbrough Bridge Athletic 0-4 Brigg Town FC CIC

After a poor result two nights earlier at home to Athersley Recreation, Brigg bounced back to take all three points from their away fixture at Worsbrough Bridge.

Every member of the team deserves praise and commendation for their joint efforts.

The game opened with Brigg playing up the gentle slope of the pitch winning a free kick for a foul against Danny Trott but Steve McCarron’s delivery was confidently held by the home ‘keeper. Worsbrough response was to attack down their left wing but a deep cross into the penalty area was headed clear. After thirteen minutes, Ryan Thompson tried a long shot from thirty yards out but the goalkeeper saved after the ball initially bounced off his chest. Thompson and McCarron combined neatly in Brigg’s next attack but the home defenders cleared the ball away from the penalty area. Brigg were fortunate to stay level after twenty minutes when poor defensive play allowed a free shot at their goal but an off-side decision was given. Two minutes later, Brigg opened the scoring when Owen Vincent followed up on his goal-bound strike to beat the home custodian.

Brigg started to pay with confidence, passing the ball about accurately and they scored the second goal after thirty-three minutes when Declan Bacon latched on to a free kick played into the penalty area by Steve McCarron. The last fifteen minutes of the first half saw Brigg taking control of the game and with almost the last kick of the first forty-five minutes of play, they added a third goal when Jacob Norburn met a right-wing corner kick to head the ball powerfully into the roof of the net.

Six minutes into the second half of the game, Brigg added a fourth goal to virtually seal the game. It came from Declan Bacon again after the ball was played neatly up the pitch from the left side of the defence presenting the opportunity for him to fire it into the back of the net from twelve yards out. The four goal cushion presented the opportunity to give game time to the substitutes after a busy couple of days of competitive football, but the team continued to play with great confidence and displayed the ability to create further chances, going close to adding more goals with strikes from Ryan Thompson, Henry Ellis and James Nicholls being saved by a busy “Briggers” goalkeeper.

The Friday evening fixture means that the team can now enjoy a free week to allow niggling injury problems more recovery time.
