Swallownest 1-2 Brigg Town FC CIC

The Zebras missed a hatful of chances but won by a narrow scoreline away at Swallownest.

From the kick off the home team worked the ball down the right wing and then forward into the middle of the pitch but Brigg goalkeeper Hewitson was able to boot the ball away to safety. In the next attack, a long hopeful shot from thirty-five yards out by Swallownest’s Callum Clark flew high over the Brigg goal.

Brigg’s immediate response resulted in the ball being played across the face of the Swallownest goal winning a left-wing corner kick, which was cleared.

In the fifth minute, the host team took the lead when a long ball played high into the Brigg half was chased by Desmond Okoro who got a touch before the advancing goalkeeper.

Six minutes later, Brigg scored an equalising goal, created by Ryan Thompson’s determination after chasing a loose ball on the right wing before supplying another telling cross for Scott Hutchinson to drive home.

Francis Fiinnernan made a forward from a mid-field run for the home team before shooting at goal from forty yards out but the ball finished high and wide of the goal.

For Brigg, Andy Taylor’s pace left him clear of the defenders but his strike at goal was well saved low down by Steven Both. Brigg began to gain more possession and played the ball around effectively, going close to taking the lead but denied by some good goalkeeping by Both from clear chances and one firm strike hitting the post.

The home team persevered with long balls into space in the Brigg half and shots from eager forwards from some distance out, but the two teams went into the break on level terms.

The second half began with a right-wing corner kick from Ryan Thompson which was met with a powerful header from Jacob Norburn going wide of the goal.

Five minutes into the half, Steve McCarron struck a shot over the bar from close range after neat play by Owen Vincent and Thompson. Brigg continued to dominate possession of the ball but the home team defended well and Both made some excellent low saves.

Midway through the half, Alfie Usher replaced the hard-working Taylor and he settled in quickly to combine well with Owen Vincent as Brigg pressed for more success. A strike from Thompson’s right-wing corner kick cannoned off the home team’s crossbar before the rebound was volleyed narrowly over it.

The winning goal was scored after eighty minutes of play when Ben Vasquez headed home another well-delivered Thompson corner from six yards out.

Brigg pressed to consolidate their lead but were denied by Both’s timely saves and some poor finishing. However, after an eight-minutes of added time, the final whistle saw the Brigg team bag the three points and their fourth victory of the new season.
