Yorkshire Amateur 1-2 Brigg Town FC CIC

The Zebras secured three more points and stretched their recent run of positive results, with confident performances by key players.

Brigg made a confident start to the game with a couple of attacks down the left wing in the opening minutes.

They took the lead after four minutes of play from a free kick played to the near post by Martin Pembleton where Steve McCarron rose to get a challenge for the ball which deflected off an Amateurs player’s head into the top corner of the net.

After Chas Fisher cleared the ball out of the Brigg penalty area following a free kick, Reggie Waud raced clear on the right wing but his strike at goal hit the upright before bouncing clear.

Brigg continued to look confident in possession of the ball and dominated most of the play throughout the first half of the game. After two free kicks by the home team were well defended, Lucas Robinson responded by striking a firm shot over the home team goal and then glancing a header just wide from another Pembleton free kick.

Jack Boswell went close to increasing the lead but his strike at goal also finished wide.

Lucas Robinson made another telling run before the ball ran away from him inside the penalty area.

Declan Bacon and Waud were a continuing threat for the home defenders and the former struck another firm shot at goal. When the Amateurs made a breakaway up the pitch to find space outside the Brigg penalty area, Luke Mascall intercepted to clear the danger.

In the closing minute of the first half, Bacon had a chance to double the score but the ball finished up over the crossbar.

The second half began with the Ammers creating their best move of the game with the ball played quickly forward into space inside the Brigg penalty area, but the assistant referee’s flag went up for offside.

Pembleton continued to orchestrate Brigg’s attacks from his midfield position and his delivery of free kicks into the opposing area always caused concern.

The second goal was eventually scored after fifty-three minutes and came from a Jack Cross free kick which found Waud who moved it on to Chas Fisher who turned smartly to volley a low shot past the Ammer’s keeper.

There was an immediate response by Amateur but the ball was played from the left wing across the goal area before being hastily cleared. Strong appeals that it had gone over the line were rejected earning the home team captain a spell in the Sin Bin.

Brigg continued to enjoy most of the possession without creating any further chances but they were given a reminder of what can happen when attempting to hold on to a two-goal lead when the home team scored seven minutes from the end after Amari Smith received the ball from a right-wing throw.

Brigg were able to control the play for the remaining minutes of the game to secure three more points and to stretch their recent run of positive results.
