Brigg Town FC CIC 1-0 Worsbrough Bridge Athletic

For their last league game of the season, Brigg welcomed the “Briggers” to the EC Surfacing Stadium, looking to extend their recent winning run to six games.

Brigg seized the early initiative with two attacks down the left wing but Dayle Hutson’s first strike was wide of the goal and the next won a deflected corner kick, which was cleared. Then Andy Taylor found space on the right-wing but his cross into the penalty area was well covered. The visitor’s goalkeeper was kept busy but handled well throughout with great confidence.

Brigg’s attacks became more intense and the best chance of opening the score came after Wayne Graves headed the ball back across the face of the goal from a left-wing cross but there was no final touch. The “Briggers” defended well but also looked dangerous with quick counterattacks and their best attempt came from a sharp shot on the turn from the edge of the Brigg penalty area.

Brigg continued to press and the ball was cleared from the Worsbrough goal-mouth area after a scramble. Leon Dawson won another right-wing corner kick but the ball was cleared up the pitch winning a right-wing corner kick for the opponents, which was blocked.

As Brigg continued to press forward and enjoy most possession, Jonathan Oglesby’s shot from Scott Phillips’ layoff was stopped and Dayle Hutson’s run to the goal line resulted in the ball being played across the face of the goal. Brigg managed to get the ball into the back of the net a couple of minutes from the half-time whistle but Scott Phillips’ effort was ruled to be off-side and the teams went into the break on level terms.

The second half followed much the same pattern as the first with the home team doing most of the pressing but kept at bay by a hard-working, young defensive outfit who always looked capable on the break.

Worsbrough began to get more possession in the second half and Brigg had to wait until three minutes from the end of the game before finding the back of the net. The goal came after Andy Taylor was sent on a chase down the right-wing and won possession to deliver a low cross into the penalty area for Scott Phillips to beat the goalkeeper with his guided shot into the back of the net.

The win concludes the season of league matches with a third-placed position behind champions Hallam and Runners’ Up North Ferriby United. However, Brigg now play fourth-placed Harrogate Railway Athletic in the end of season play-off game to be staged at Brigg next Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, North Ferriby will play Rossington Main on their own ground and the winners of each of these two games will meet a week later to decide which is to be promoted.
