Brigg Town FC CIC 3-0 Parkgate

A highly competent team performance was rewarded with three points, securing a league position for the play-offs at the end of the season.

From the kick off, Brigg attacked down the right-wing but the final cross into the penalty area was cleared. The Steelmen responded and won a corner kick but Jonathan Oglesby gained possession to break forward down the left only to over-run the ball out of play. Nathan Peat then headed a left-wing corner kick marginally wide. Another corner kick by Park Gate was blocked before Josh Batty went close to finding the top corner of the net with a header. Brigg continued to press and Josh Batty met a delivery from the left wing with the outside of his right foot going wide of the far post

There was a goalmouth scramble before Jordan Greaves in the opponent’s goal picked the ball up cleanly. Brigg continued to gain most possession but it was the visitors who went close to scoring after twenty minutes when Max Rhodes crossed the ball into the penalty area for Aiden Salmons to strike a shot against the crossbar.

Brigg responded with the first goal of the game four minutes later. Josh Batty received the ball at his feet from a left swing attack and turned sharply to find the bottom corner of the net from fifteen yards out. Encouraged by this success, Brigg continued to press with close efforts going to Martin Pembleton and Owen Vincent. Two successive right-wing corners by Brigg were cleared after a foul on the goalkeeper but the spell of pressure resulted in a second goal after forty-three minutes.

When Jonathan Oglesby played the ball into the penalty area from the left-wing, Dayle Hutson met it to steer it into the back of the net. There was an instant reaction by the visitors, who created two excellent chances to reduce the arrears before half-time. First, a through pass into the penalty area was scrambled clear and then Miles Fenty stopped a fierce goal-bound volley with a reaction save.

Two minutes into the second half, Brigg scored again to take a three-goal lead. Dayle Hutson raced on to a long forward pass to drive the ball into the back of the net from twenty yards out. Brigg were able to control the play and went close to increasing the score further with Josh Batty, Owen Vincent, Steve McCarron and Jonathan Oglesby all having close efforts. Josh Batty was unlucky to miss out when he flung himself forward in an attempt to head the ball into the back of the net from Dayle Hutson’s pass. Meanwhile, the defence looked solid again and restricted opportunities for the visitors to get back into the contest.

The nearest they came was from a header following a cross delivered from the left-wing which flew over the crossbar, and a long-range shot from Max Rhodes was also off target.
