Brigg Town FC CIC 3-2 Glasshoughton Miners Welfare

Brigg began the new season with a home fixture against Glasshoughton Miners from West Yorkshire, anticipating a positive start in the league in front of a good crowd of supporters.

The home team were first to threaten with Steve McCarron winning a corner kick from the right-wing but Martin Pemberton’s delivery was cleared from the goal area. After another corner kick from the opposite wing was again cleared, the ball was played back in for Andy Taylor to strike a fierce shot inches over the crossbar.

After being awarded a free kick for a foul outside the penalty area, Martin Pemberton’s cross was too deep for any advantage to be gained.

When the visitors responded, goalkeeper Miles Fenty had to make a low diving save. Glasshoughton settled down well and began to enjoy more possession but Brigg were guilty of too many long hopeful long balls forward. From a right-wing throw, Jamie Simpson won possession to send the ball across the face of Brigg’s goal but it drifted out of play.

Jack Bowskin made a couple of timely defensive tackles and Andy Taylor made a strong forward run, the ball being deflected for a corner kick from his shot at goal. The same player combined well with Martin Pemberton to create another opening but visiting goalkeeper Sam Riches saved low down in his area.

On the counter-attack, Jamie Simpson won a right-wing corner kick from which Miles Fenty had to make another save.

The opening goal was scored in the thirty-ninth minute when poor defending allowed Lewis Stephens the opportunity to latch on to a pass from the right-wing before finding the corner of the Brigg goal. Brigg pushed forward trying to make an immediate response with two attacks down the left wing but it was the visiting team who went into the half-time interval a goal ahead.

Brigg introduced three substitutes for the second half and their overall play was better, able to move the ball about the pitch with more confidence. Five minutes after the break, the equalising goal was scored after Martin Pemberton chased the ball to the goal line and pulled it back across the goal area for Scott Phillips to find the far corner of the net.

Brigg continued to enjoy more possession but their opponents always looked capable of quick counter-attacks.

However, the second goal for the home team came after seventy-seven minutes after Wayne Graves kept the ball in play close to the left goal line before pulling it back for Alfie Usher to strike a firm shot into the back of the net from fifteen yards out.

The third goal came two minutes from time after a dropped ball decision halfway into the Glasshoughton half of the field was worked neatly down the right-wing before the final cross into the penalty area where Andy Taylor spun to fire it into the back of the net.

Glasshoughton made an immediate response and reduced the arrears in the second minute of added time from a right-wing corner kick swung into the six-yard goal area with a deflected shot from Adam Walsh ending up in the back of the net.

Next Saturday, Brigg travel to play Ollerton Town, hoping to continue the winning start.
