Brigg Town FC CIC 3-2 Retford FC

Brigg began the new season with three points secured in added time at the end of the game.

From the kick-off, Brigg attacked strongly down the left wing with a final strike going over the Retford goalkeeper’s crossbar. Then in the next attack down the right wing, Daniel Trott worked the ball inside the area for Andy Taylor to find the corner of the net after just seventy-five seconds of play.

Obviously encouraged by this early success, Brigg were urged on by the supporting crowd and scored a second goal three minutes later. This time it came after Taylor chased a loose ball into the penalty area before delivering a low cross for Daniel Trott to smartly head it into the net from close range.

Continuing to press forward, further chances were created but Retford slowly began to settle and to tighten up with their marking. Tom Johnson headed a long free kick away from the penalty area and a couple of successive left wing corner kicks were well defended.

Then in the thirty-fifth minute, the visitors scored a goal after attacking again down their left wing. The ball was worked inside from close to the touch line for Haydn Goddard to spin around before finding the top far corner of the Brigg goal from twenty yards out.

An opportunity arose in the final minute of the first half for Brigg to restore the two-goal advantage, but after breaking through on the left wing and with a one-on-one situation, the Retford ‘keeper got his fingertips to divert the ball out of play via the woodwork.

The second half began with another early break by Taylor who was able to send a teasing cross into the goal mouth area but Trott just missed out in front of goal.

Retford were more effective and began their best spell of the game, scoring an equalising goal after fifty-seven minutes when Liam Frost was given too much space before directing a well-aimed shot into the top corner of the net. With the scoreline level, the game could have been won by either team with chances created at both ends of the pitch.

However, as full time whistle approached it was Brigg who scored the winner in added time. After breaking into space on their right wing, the ball was played low into the middle of the penalty area and Brett Agnew was in the right place to drive it home firmly to secure the win.

With a busy week ahead, Brigg play Athersley Recreation at home on Wednesday evening and follow this up on Friday evening with a trip to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.
