A Scott Phillips hat-trick helped Brigg notch a home victory against a battling Swallownest side.
In the opening minute of the game, Brigg put pressure on the visitors’ defence, winning a free kick mid-way into their half of the pitch. Robbie Start worked the ball across the face of the goal to the opposite side of the penalty area. The ball was deflected out of play for a corner kick but this was well defended and cleared. Jack Bowskin pushed forward to get a firm shot on goal from outside the penalty area but goalkeeper Owen Evans tipped the ball round his nearside post. The goalkeeper was in fine form to save another fierce shot from Jack Richardson by conceding a corner kick again. Evans continued to give a fine performance in the Swallownest goal throughout the match until unfortunately having to be substituted through injury early in the second half.
Brigg had the ball in the back of the net after ten minutes of play but an off-side decision was awarded. Continuing to win more team possession, Josh Batty was unable to get a firm connection on a forward through ball played into the penalty area from Reece Newell.
Swallownest began to settle and got more into the game, testing David Birch with an in-swinging right-wing corner kick but this was confidently held. The response came from Josh Batty who ran clear into the opposing penalty area but was stopped by a good retrieving tackle before he was able to have a strike at goal. Despite having less of the ball in the first quarter of the game, the visitors scored the opening goal. This came shortly before half an hour of play from a right-wing corner kick which caused a scramble in the goal area before Jason Short was first to react to an initial goalkeeping save before finding the bottom corner of the net. The Brigg response was immediate but Owen Evans made another fine diving save at the foot of his post to keep his team ahead. Three minutes from half time a right-wing corner kick was cleared off the Swallownest goal line for a second corner kick at the other side of the pitch. This resulted in an equalising goal from Scott Phillips‘ header to send the teams in level at the break.
Three minutes into the second half, Brigg took the lead with another strike which was deflected by Mitchell Kent from the head of Scott Phillips after the ball had been played across the penalty area from the right-wing. Five minutes later, Brigg thought the referee had awarded a penalty kick in their favour but after consultation with his Assistant, a corner kick was given instead. Just short of the hour mark, Swallownest scored an equalising goal after Nano Nyarko delivered a long ball into the penalty area for substitute Jake Hatton to find the back of the net with a good header. The points were up for grabs by both teams at this stage and Brigg responded quickly to their setback with another effort from Josh Batty deflected clear for a corner kick. Substitutions were made mid-way through the half and more threats came down the left-wing. Scott Phillips put Brigg back in front after seventy two minutes when a powerful shot struck the Swallownest goal crossbar, before rebounding into his firing line enabling him to find the back of the net. Brigg continued to create chances for further goals but the fourth didn’t come until the eighty-second minute when Scott Phillips completed his hat-trick, the goal coming directly from a left-wing corner kick to ensure the team won all three points.
Next Saturday, the Zebras travel to the Roundwood Pavilion to play Parkgate.
