Brigg Town FC CIC 5-0 Parkgate

Brigg Town avenged back-to-back defeats in style thrashing Parkgate 5-0 at the EC Surfacing Stadium. The Steelmen were unable to build on their emphatic 6-0 win over Athersley Recreation in midweek.

Defenders Chaz Fisher and Alfie Davy were missing due to illness and a ban respectively. Their replacements Will Taylor and Luke Mascall put in solid performances to secure a clean sheet.

A minute’s silence was observed before kick off in memory of lifelong Zebras fan Gordon Neal.

In the 6th minute, Taylor glanced home Stephen McCarron’s cross with a stooping header to put the Zebras ahead.

Soon afterwards Parkgate’s Jed McGowan picked up an injury. The left back was replaced by Owen Kelly.

After play resumed Josh Batty, who was lively up front and a constant threat going forward, had a shot blocked inside a crowded box.

Brigg were then given a left off when Ross Duggan headed wide from close range.

It remained well balanced until half time with the hosts keeping their slender lead going into the break.

The Zebras got a slice of luck 6 minutes into the second half with McCarron’s free kick deflecting off Thomas Kirkland for an own goal.

Afterwards Brigg were less fortunate to have three goals chalked off for alleged offsides.

First Batty was flagged after latching onto Thompson’s through ball to score. It was then the other way round with Thompson having an effort that was set up by Batty disallowed.

Minutes later another should have stood because Batty was onside the moment Luke Sellers passed to him.

On 63 minutes a goal from Batty eventually counted. The in-form striker dribbled round a defender, exchanged passes with McCarron and fired into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Late on Jack Richardson came close before the Zebras bagged goals in the 87th and 89th minute.

Substitutes combined for Brigg’s fourth goal with Dayle Hutson playing in Joe Pugh, who found the net with aplomb.

Barely 2 minutes later Alfie Usher – another sub who made an impact – went on a mazy run through the defence and rounded off the rout with a neat finish.

The Zebras produced a scintillating display in front of 229 fans. This was their biggest home victory of the season.

Elsewhere, Wakefield AFC and Ollerton Town lost while Horbury Town and Retford FC only managed a draw. It was a great day all round as Brigg won heavily with rivals dropping points.

The Zebras are now just 5 points adrift of the play-off zone.

Zebras Eleven:

Barford, Mascall, Petronzio, Richardson, Taylor, Briggs, Sellers, McCarron, Batty, Vincent, Thompson.

Substitutes:

Pugh, Boswell, Usher, Harman, Hutson.

Match Attendance: 229
