Nostell Miners Welfare 1-2 Brigg Town FC CIC

Chas Fisher and Scott Phillips returned to the starting line up as Brigg faced the Wakefield area team, Nostell Miners Welfare FC, for their first league away fixture of the new season.

In the opening minute of the game, Brigg attacked down the right wing with Josh Batty finding time and space to cross the ball into the penalty area but home keeper Rhys Westcarr got down to save comfortably. Continuing to press forward, Joel McFadyen was caught offside and Josh Batty struck a first-time shot from a left-wing cross well over the crossbar. Further good work by Josh Batty on the right wing ended with another shot wide of the upright.

The home team began to get more of the ball and Harvey Walker set up Luis Penny-Larter for a strike on goal which Tom Collins saved. After a free kick was cleared from the Brigg penalty area, the ball was worked neatly to the other end of the pitch but the slick move ended with an offside decision.

After half an hour of play, there was a scramble in the home team goal area with Alfie Usher and Scott Philips both trying to get a firm foot on the ball after it was played in but it was booted clear.

At the other end, Tom Collins produced a great save off a free kick from twenty yards out taken by Nathan Hawkhead after perfectly setting up the defensive wall. Another shot from Joel McFadyen flew over Rhys Westcarr’s goal and just before the half-time interval, Alfie Usher struck a thirty-yard shot against the crossbar but the teams went in level at the break.

The home team opened the scoring six minutes into the second half when Joe Wood ran on to a ball played into space down the middle of the pitch and past Chas Fisher before striking a firm shot into the roof of the net.

The goal was a wake-up call for Brigg to respond quickly but Scott Phillips was caught offside in their next attack.

Continuing to press, Alfie Usher made a forward run down the left after fifty-eight minutes and was brought down in the area as he tried to go past the home keeper. Scott Phillips struck the spot kick firmly past Rhys Westcarr to level the score.

Brigg immediately introduced Steve McCarron and Dayle Hutson as substitutes and took control of the game with better passing sequences and formation.

The winning goal came after seventy minutes when Steve McCarron took control of the ball in midfield on the right and floated it into space inside the penalty area for Joel McFadyen to get away from Brandan Hughes Miller before chipping the ball over the advancing goalkeeper into the back of the net.

Martin Pembleton was introduced to further control midfield play and Brigg looked comfortable in defending their lead but the home team pushed for an equaliser.

The game ended after a couple of corner kicks by Nostell were cleared from the goal area so giving the Brigg team a first league win of the season.

The next match is on Wednesday evening at home against Dronfield Town.
