Wakefield AFC 2-1 Brigg Town FC CIC

The impressive Millennium Stadium – the home of Featherstone Rovers RLFC - was the venue for Brigg Town’s game at Wakefield AFC.

The Zebras took an early lead when Fraser Papprill won the ball inside a crowded box and teed up Lawrence Heward, who drove a shot into the corner of the net. Kevan Kahoussi made a couple of runs down the left for Brigg but his final crosses into the goal area were well defended.

Wakefield responded with a patient attack down their left wing that led to a corner kick. When this was played across the area, the final shot at goal rebounded off the post.

Soon afterwards the home team had to make a substitution when Lucas Stubbs replaced the injured Billy Mole.

They pushed further forward and won another corner, which was well defended.

Minutes later, Jake Morrison ran strongly from halfway down the middle of the pitch but Tom Collins made a fine save from his vicious shot.

At the other end, Jack Richardson spun around inside the home penalty area to send a snap shot just wide.

The half closed with Tom Collins producing another double save to deny Lucas Stubbs, ensuring it remained 0-1 at the interval.

Five minutes into the second half a thunderous strike from 30 yards cannoned off the inside of Brigg’s left post. Brigg countered but strikes from Scott Phillips and Martin Pembleton were off target.

Tom Collins saved well from a strong shot from outside the penalty area and followed this with a diving save low down to deny Jake Morrison.

Wakefield’s continued pressure resulted in an equaliser on sixty-three minutes. Brigg conceded a free kick for a handball on the edge of the area in a central position that Cory Woodward drilled low past Collins into the bottom right corner.

From then on Brigg were the better side and almost retook the lead when Josh Batty’s 20-yarder rattled the crossbar. Less than two minutes later, substitute Stephen McCarron fired narrowly wide from 20 yards.

There were strong appeals for a goal after Kevan Kahoussi’s right-wing cross found Josh Batty, whose shot appeared to cross the line before the goalkeeper tipped it onto the left post. A goal could easily have been given.

Brigg kept pressing with James Petronzio surging forward to strike a shot marginally wide and two consecutive right-wing corner kicks were cleared.

In stoppage time, a Wakefield attack down the left wing led to a goal-mouth scramble. Brigg failed to clear their lines allowing Lucas Stubbs to nick a very late winner.

The Zebras had no time to respond and slumped to a 2-1 defeat.

Brigg were unlucky to lose and hope to bounce back in Saturday’s FA Vase clash at home to Runcorn Town.
