Brigg Town FC CIC 14-1 Teversal

Brigg dominated a plucky young Teversal side, scoring a League-record win and maintaining their push for promotion.

Brigg began the game strongly on the offensive, winning two corner kicks on the left-wing in the opening minute but these were well defended. Keeping up the pressure, the first goal came in the third minute from another left-wing attack after the ball was switched inside for Dayle Hutson to run clear before finding the back of the net from fifteen yards out.

Looking confident in possession of the ball, Jonathan Oglesby was prominent in the next attacks down the right-wing to win corner kicks which Teversal goalkeeper cleared from his area.

At the other end of the pitch, David Birch’s long clearance into the opponents’ half found Josh Batty but his strike went over the bar. Then Wayne Graves was in the right position to head the ball clear of the goal area when Teversal counter-attacked.

A cross into the penalty area from Brigg’s left wing was headed just over the bar and when the ball was played to the other end of the pitch, David Birch was called upon to rush from his goal line to clear. Another promising move down the right-wing ended with Josh Batty‘s strike going over the bar while at the other end of the pitch a corner kick by Teversal was headed clear.

Brigg were enjoying plenty of possession but the second goal didn’t come until the twenty-fifth minute. This was the result of another strike from Josh Batty being half stopped on the goal line but Dayle Hutson was quick to react and he found the back of the net from five yards out.

Heads went down in the young Teversal team and within another five minutes, the game was almost decided. Jack Bowskin took a left-wing pass from Jonathan Oglesby to drive a fierce shot into the back of the net after thirty minutes and Dayle Hutson completed his early hat-trick of goals a minute later after the ball was pulled back along the face of the goal from the right.

Five minutes later, Teversal were awarded a free kick in a central position outside the area and the ball was driven into the defensive wall resulting in a penalty kick from which Cameron Pinnick’s strike beat David Birch to reduce the arrears.

In the last minute of the half, Jonathan Oglesby scored a fifth goal for the home team to restore their four-goal advantage when he raced clear through onto a defence-splitting pass, thus sending the teams into the break with Brigg comfortably in control.

Within five minutes of the re-start, Brigg added two further goals to their account. First, Josh Batty’s successful free kick was quickly followed up with a delightful chip over the advancing goalkeeper for his second. Another of his strikes finished marginally wide of the upright as Brigg dominated play.

Brigg introduced their substitutes with Steve McCarron and Scott Phillips coming on. Jack Bowskin scored the best goal of the game after a flowing move down the pitch ended with the ball played into his path in an advanced position on the right from where he volleyed a firm shot into the back of the net.

It was all-out attacking football in front of a decent size supporting crowd for the last half hour of the game which saw Josh Batty and then Scott Phillips each scoring three more goals, in between which the ball had hit the woodwork and goal-line clearances had been made.

For their part, Teversal continued to give their utmost and chased right up to the final whistle but it was a day when most things fell in favour of the home team.

The win keeps the team in contact with the League leaders but there are difficult fixtures ahead where it will be absolutely necessary to maintain current form.
