The home team opened the scoring inside the first minute of the game when the ball was played forward into space behind the Brigg defenders allowing Joe Wood to race clear before beating David Birch with a firm shot into the bottom of the net from fifteen yards out.
Brigg responded immediately with Tom Johnson testing goalkeeper Chris Borrow with a low drive aimed at the corner of the goal. Nostell won a right-wing corner kick but this was cleared up the pitch for Josh Batty to win possession with a deflected strike winning a corner kick from which Tom Johnson headed just wide.
Brigg began to get more possession and threatened with counter-attacking moves. They were awarded a penalty kick in the eleventh minute when goalkeeper Chris Borrow tripped Scott Phillips inside his six yard area and the Brigg striker made no mistake with the spot kick.
A minute later, Brigg took the lead when Wayne Graves pushed forward down the left wing into the penalty area before finding the far corner of the net with a crisp shot.
From then onwards, Brigg enjoyed more and more possession and looked capable of adding further goals but found Chris Borrow in excellent form for the home team making a string of positive saves. Strong appeals for a second penalty kick were ignored.
When Dayle Hutson won possession of the ball inside the Nostell penalty area his strike was blocked. Then Scott Phillips missed out on adding to his goal total after running clear of the home team defenders.
After thirty five minutes, Jonathan Oglesby’s effort from outside the penalty area floated past the top corner of the net and this was followed by a Josh Batty shot narrowly over the crossbar. Chris Borrow made a couple of great saves in the closing minutes of the half to keep his team well in the game at the break and left Brigg to ponder whether they would regret the missed opportunities the first half’s play had provided.

The second half began with yet another couple of fine saves made by the confident Chris Borrow but Brigg scored the third important goal just three minutes later. From a right-wing corner kick, Tom Johnson was able to get his head on the ball to find the back of the net. Minutes later, Tom Johnson lost control of the ball in the middle of the pitch when the Miners attacked down their right-wing but Wayne Graves was able to challenge strongly to clear any danger.
Dayle Hutson set up an opportunity for Scott Phillips but Chis Borrow dived to save his shot low down at the foot of his goal post. At the other end of the pitch, David Birch was well-positioned to save a long-range free kick but the Brigg team was able to keep relative control of the game with the two-goal lead but was unable to add any further goals as the Miners defended well.
The victory was important to keep the team in close touch with the League leaders.
On Tuesday evening the team travels again to face Rossington Main in the third round of the League Cup competition and follows this up with a home League fixture next Saturday afternoon against Shirebrook Town.
