Rossington Main 1-3 Brigg Town FC CIC

Brigg made six team changes for this Northern Counties (East) League Challenge Cup Third Round game.

The home team began well with two quick attacks down the left wing but the final crosses into the penalty area were well defended. Brigg first responded with Jack Bowskin working the ball to Scott Phillips at the far post, who won a corner kick but this was cleared comfortably. Martin Pembleton was unfortunate to be substituted early in the game due to injury but the team began to settle well.

A poor back pass from Main’s Greg Young had to be hurriedly cleared by the home ‘keeper, Kian Johnson to clear their first threat on goal. The first goal was scored on the half-hour mark when the ball was played high into the goal area from the left-wing escaping the clutching hands of Kian Johnson but falling kindly for Scott Phillips to drive it into the back of the net from a short distance out.

Brigg were encouraged by this success and pushed further forward to add a second goal ten minutes later. This came as a result of a right wing attack allowing Reece Newell the opportunity to drive a shot into the back of the net from an accurate cross into the penalty area.

Further chances fell to increase the goals scored but the home defence stood firm to keep the deficit to two goals at half time.

Five minutes after the re-start, Brigg scored again to put the team into a strong game-winning position. Josh Batty challenged bravely for a bouncing ball played straight down the middle of the pitch and was injured in a collision with the home ’keeper Kian Johnson but there was enough pace on his touch of the ball for it to roll forward into the back of the net ahead of defender Ryan Wharton.

Brigg were successful in playing the ball about without having to take risks and both teams made use of their substitutes, Rossington began to get more possession of the ball in the closing stages of the game but Jon Oglesby was unlucky with a shot that struck the crossbar from a tight angle.

Kian Johnson had just one more telling shot to save and the home team had to wait until three minutes from the end of the game before scoring a consolation goal after Declan Slater found the corner of the net with a low driven shot.

Brigg were subsequently removed from the competition for fielding an ineligible player.
