Hall Road Rangers 3-2 Brigg Town FC CIC

An away defeat to a confident Hall Road Rangers team saw Town lose ground to the league leaders.

In the second minute of the game, Rangers tried a shot at goal from forty yards out but the ball went past the upright. Brigg responded and won a corner kick from the left but this was initially cleared before Dayle Hutson was caught offside when it was played back into the goal area.

After six minutes Rangers opened the scoring when Brigg failed to clear the ball effectively and Lewis Gibson was left unmarked to find the back of the net. Clearly encouraged by this early success, Rangers pushed forward again and within a couple of minutes of the first goal, Chris Spinks found James Piercey free to head home a second to double the score.

After their poor start to the game, Brigg slowly began to achieve more possession and adapt to the strong windy conditions. From a left-wing corner kick by Jon Oglesby, Scott Phillips connected well with the cross but was off target.

Then in the twentieth-minute, Dayle Hutson combined well with Alfie Usher before the latter found the top corner of the goal. At this stage, Brigg were back in the game and when Martin Pembleton was fouled just outside the penalty area, Dayle Hutson’s shot went across the face of the goal.

The home team responded with Sam Robinson working the ball in from the right wing before striking a shot against the crossbar. Martin Pembleton found space down the Brigg left wing to send another shot across the face of the goal.

Two minutes before half-time, Rangers scored a critical third goal at a time when Brigg had worked well to get back into the game. Former Zebra Reece Moody was left unmarked down the middle of the pitch before taking possession of a long ball played through from the defence to drive a firm shot into the roof of the net.

Hall Road defended well throughout the second half to hold on to their two-goal lead. Alfie Usher and Jon Oglesby worked one opening down the right-wing but it ended with the ball going past the upright. Brigg won a series of corner kicks but found goalkeeper Aidan Smith in fine form with his excellent handling, which in turn spread confidence to his teammates.

Brigg left it late to change their attacking options but Steve McCarron set up a last-minute goal for Scott Phillips to reduce the arrears but this proved to be only a consolation as the home team celebrated gaining all three points.
