Brigg Town FC CIC 1-0 Retford FC

Brigg won a tight game thanks to a stunning 30-yard Scott Phillips volley.

The game began with the visitors attacking down the left wing to win a long throw into the penalty area which was defended well. Brigg responded with Lawrence Heward making a driving run to work the ball out to Dayle Hutson but the latter was caught offside.

Retford pressed forward again and after an initial shot at goal went over the bar, they won two more consecutive corner kicks, going close with the second which went out of play off the bottom of the upright. Lawrence Heward then played a long ball into space down the left wing which won a corner kick but this was comfortably cleared from the goal area.

The two teams found few opportunities for the remaining minutes of the first half, cancelling each other’s play with solid defending. Brigg went close when Finlay O’Sullivan met a left-wing corner kick inside the penalty area but his scoring attempt was deflected past the post.

Play throughout the second half of the game was much better from both sides. After the scrappy first half of the game, Brigg opened up the second period with more purpose and confidence to press forward to win a right-wing corner kick in the early minutes, but this was again well defended.

The better movements involved neat passing between Owen Vincent and Scott Phillips creating space for Dayle Hutson to fire a shot past the top angle of the goal. Scott Phillips went close with a header after the ball was crossed from the left-wing and as Brigg continued to apply some pressure Steve McCarron’s shot was parried by the goalkeeper before being kicked clear.

The only goal of the game was scored after seventy-three minutes following a free kick awarded for a foul against Jonathan Oglesby. When the ball was fed inside to Scott Phillips some thirty yards out he found the top corner of the net with an outstanding first-time volley.

The goal against them stirred the visitors into more attacks as they searched for an equaliser. They went close when an in-swinging right-wing corner kick was cleared off the goal line and again from a set piece left-wing corner kick which finished up bouncing over the bar.

Brigg saw the game through to win by the single goal, a win that virtually seals a play-off position with their superior goal difference – but with still three more games to play.
