Brigg Town FC CIC 1-5 Wombwell Town

After the midweek defeat at Parkgate, the Zebras were hoping to find better form when welcoming early league leaders Wombwell, but were well beaten again.

The first half was pretty even with both teams creating good scoring chances.

Brigg opened with an attack down the left wing but the Wombwell ‘keeper Jonathan Davis held on to a low shot and followed this up by clearing a long free kick played into his goal area from the centre circle.

Scott Hutchinson then dragged a shot wide from the edge of the area after the ball fell to him from an attempted clearance.

Wombwell soon settled to enjoy a spell of possession with quick counter-attacks and used long throws into the Brigg penalty area to maintain the pressure. When Luke Mascall was dispossessed, Elliott Broughton was tested, turning a strike at goal past the post. Owen Vincent’s penetrating run towards goal was well saved by Davis who continued to make some important saves.

Brigg had their best period of the game and opened the scoring after half an hour of play when Chas Fisher met a Luke Mascall corner to head firmly into the back of Wombwell’s net.

Soon after, the Wombwell ‘keeper tipped a free kick by Vincent over the crossbar.

In the added time at the end of the first half, Wombwell scored an equalising goal. Brigg switched off at a dropped ball, which Wombwell played across the pitch to the right wing before switching it across the face of the goal for Edward Agnew to find the far top corner of the net, despite Broughton’s attempts to keep it out.

From the beginning of the second half, Wombwell seized the initiative to completely dominate the game.

After fifty-two minutes, Gavin Allot put his team ahead for the first time when a left-wing attack was only partially cleared and rebounded out of the goal area for him to drive it into the back of the net.

Ten minutes later the referee awarded a penalty kick for a push in the back inside the area and Allott drove the spot kick into the bottom corner of the net.

This was followed five minutes later by another penalty kick awarded after Broughton’s foul, with Callum Walton successfully converting.

Brigg had one more chance to reduce the arrears but were denied by yet another fine diving save by Davis, but Wombell’s fifth goal came ten minutes from time when Bradley Kerr converted a third penalty kick.
