Wakefield AFC 2-3 Brigg Town FC CIC

Wakefield Trinity Rugby ground was the venue for Brigg’s league fixture on Saturday afternoon. The team had to work hard to secure a well-deserved win after their run of poor results throughout September.

Recent signings Lewis Hill, Peter Winn, Prince Haywood, Jack Cross and Martin Pembleton were in the starting line-up with Manager Brett Agnew also present, whilst Ras Diamond was on the subs’ bench.

The home team began strongly with two attacking raids down their right wing but Brigg responded with Jack Cross winning a corner kick, which was comfortably defended.

Then, a snap shot at Lewis Hill’s goal struck the upright before going out of play.

The early pressure on the Brigg defence brought a goal in the ninth minute after a free kick awarded for a foul on Martin Pembleton in the centre circle broke down enabling Oliver Green to advance into the penalty area before finding the corner of the goal.

Brigg began to gain more of the ball in the last twenty minutes of the first half with Agnew setting the example for his players by winning most of the balls played up for him to head onwards.

Pembleton and Jack Cross combined well in the Brigg midfield to create openings but George Bristol in the home team’s goal handled confidently to preserve Wakefield’s single-goal lead at the break.

Wakefield began the second half with further dangerous progressive movements but Hill, making his debut in the Brigg goal, made good saves to deny them and another left-wing cross was knocked just clear.

Scott Hutchinson came on for Ben Vasquez after an hour of play and within a further four minutes, Brigg scored an equalising goal. It came from a right-wing cross from Pembleton into the area where Brett Agnew sent a subtle glancing header into the corner of the net.

Three minutes later, Brigg took the lead when Agnew challenged for another Pembleton cross in the area allowing Peter Winn space to find the corner of the net.

Wakefield quickly responded and were back level three minutes later.

Following a strong attack down their left wing, the ball was crossed into the goal area where Hill made another valiant attempt to clear a low vicious strike at goal but the ball cannoned off his chest to the alert Jaydan Sandhu who followed up to drive it into the net from five yards out.

The game was in the balance for the last twenty minutes of play with clear openings created at both ends of the pitch.

A free kick from Cross was blocked by the defensive before Hill saved well at the other end despite an offside decision being awarded.

Then Pembleton, back to his best, forced the home goalkeeper into making a save.

With five minutes of play remaining, the home team were reduced to ten players when Nathan Hawkhead was shown a second yellow.

Brigg seized the opportunity and as the final whistle approached they made a last attack. Prince Haywood’s telling ball over Wakefield’s defence was dropped by Bristol under pressure from McCarron at the far post, who stabbed it across the open goal for Scott Hutchinson to tap in from inches to secure the win.

The whole team played well for the full ninety minutes. Wakefield missed out on some clear chances in the first half whilst Brigg were much more organised in the second period. The new signings made favourable impressions and settled in well to play important roles in securing the three points.

Brigg now play on Tuesday evening at Dronfield Town and follow this up with a home game against Harrogate Railway Athletic next Saturday afternoon.
