Armthorpe Miners Welfare 2-7 Brigg Town FC CIC

Brigg were hoping to improve their league table position when they travelled to play Armthorpe Welfare at the Marra Falcons Stadium in this mid-week fixture.

Welfare started the game with Jack Mawson winning a right-wing corner kick but Sean Dickinson’s initial cross was headed clear before his second attempt ended with the ball drifting out of play. Brigg responded with Dayle Hutson beginning to threaten down the right before finding Scott Phillips free but his strike at goal hit the side netting. After winning more possession, Alfie Usher’s free-kick was blocked and then when the ball was played across the face of the goal no one could reach it for a tap in.

When the home team were awarded a free-kick for a handling offence, Reece High wasted the opportunity by blasting the ball over the Brigg crossbar. Miles Fenty was in position to make a save after a quick Welfare attack and set up a response which ended with Dayle Hutson heading Robbie Start’s cross over the bar.

The opening goal was scored in the thirty-first minute after ‘keeper Callum Fielding parried a long-range shot before Alfie Usher challenged for possession on the goal line and worked his way past his marker to strike the ball from a tight angle into the far corner of the net. Encouraged by this success, Robbie Start delivered another telling cross into the goal area and Steve McCarron headed just wide.

Brigg scored a second goal after forty minutes when the home defenders lost the ball whilst trying to move up the pitch leaving a clearance for Alfie Usher to exploit with a firm strike into the bottom corner of the net from twenty yards out.

The two-goal cushion allowed Brigg to control the closing minutes of the first half and another fierce shot from Wayne Graves flew over the home goal crossbar.

Three minutes into the second half, the home team reduced the arrears when a weak back pass to Miles Fenty was intercepted by Adam Baskerville and passed on for Reece High to knock the ball into the bottom of the net. At this stage, the game looked to be in the balance but Brigg reacted to their setback in the most positive way with a scoring spree.

Steve McCarron struck the first of his hat-trick of goals in the fifty-fifth minute following a left-wing corner kick. He followed this up with further stunning goals after sixty-two and then a third after sixty-seven minutes. In between, another shot from Scott Phillips some thirty yards from goal flew wide of the upright and a left-wing cross was headed over the bar.

With a four-goal cushion, Brigg were well in control of the game and Andy Taylor added a sixth goal with a cracking drive into the top corner of the net after seventy-one minutes. Armthorpe continued to work hard for more possession and their efforts were rewarded with a second goal in the seventy-fifth minute when Jack Wilson was set up to tap the ball into an empty net after a simple run through the heart of the Brigg defence.

With three minutes of play remaining, the final goal was scored by Town’s Dayle Hutson after he ran well clear of a retreating home defence.

The three points won from this game maintained a challenging position in the League table. Brigg next face Clipstone in a home fixture on Saturday afternoon this week.
