Brigg Town FC CIC 7-3 Clipstone

After their splendid away win in midweek at Armthorpe where they found the back of the net seven times, Brigg were back at home for this fixture against “The Cobras” from Clipstone and succeeded in scoring another seven goals.

Miles Fenty and Wayne Graves were not available for selection but Martin Pembleton returned to the starting line-up.

Luke Manlove was caught offside in the visitors’ first attack and Brigg responded with Alfie Usher finding space down the left touchline but his cross into the penalty area was too deep. After five minutes Clipstone striker Jack Warwick’s shot from fifteen yards out went over the bar. Then Andy Taylor and Dayle Hutson combined well but visiting goalkeeper Sam Ogden gathered the ball safely.

The first goal was scored after seventeen minutes of play after a left-wing corner kick for Clipstone from Jason Foster was cleared down the left wing to Alfie Usher, who worked his way to the goal line before setting up Andy Taylor the opportunity to fire a firm shot into the back of the net from a short distance out.

Brigg were encouraged and began to enjoy more and more possession of the ball in Clipstone’s half but when the visitors responded, a header from Jason Foster was just too high.

The second goal for Brigg came after half an hour of play following another slick move down the left. When the ball was moved across the edge of the penalty area, Scott Phillips connected with a firm drive into the top corner of the net.

Two minutes later Alfie Usher made it three with another shot into the same top corner from a similar distance out after the ball was crossed from the right-wing. Continuing to attack with confidence now high, a fourth goal came after thirty-eight minutes from Martin Pembleton’s penalty kick awarded for a foul inside the area.

Scott Phillips grabbed his second goal with a neat turn inside the penalty area to meet a left-wing cross so giving the home team a five-goal lead but this was reduced in the last minute of the half when Mitchell Mullins followed up on a free-kick played into the penalty area by Jason Foster.

Clipstone started the second half better and scored again inside ten minutes. It came after a strike from Martin Pembleton went over the bar and another from Dayle Hutson was blocked by Sam Ogden. When the ball was played up to the other end of the pitch Charlie Dawes seized the opportunity to find the back of the net. There was an immediate response from Brigg with Alfie Usher working his way into the penalty area two minutes later before his shot took a deflection into the roof of the net.

Only one minute passed before Clipstone gallantly scored again to make it back to a three-goal deficit. This time the goal came from Jack Warwick who headed home a well-delivered right-wing cross. That made it nine goals scored in the first sixty minutes of the match, well appreciated by the crowd.

Andy Taylor almost scored again after a right-wing attack but his final shot went across the face of the goal. The final scoreline was completed three minutes from time when Scott Phillips completed his well-deserved hat-trick after running onto a long ball played down the middle of the pitch before driving it home.

The next game is on Tuesday evening at Teversal (Mansfield), to be followed on Saturday afternoon against League leaders Nostell Miners Welfare.
