Teversal 0-4 Brigg Town FC CIC

Buoyed by their second seven-goal haul in as many games, Brigg Town made a Tuesday night trip to Nottinghamshire to play Teversal.

Teversal opened the game with a long ball played down the left wing but the resulting cross into the penalty area was too deep and went out of play for a goal kick. Brigg quickly responded but in their first attack, home defender Joe Geeson conceded a free kick for a late tackle, from which the ball was cleared out of the penalty area. Scott Phillips got his head to a cross from the right-wing to see his attempt finish wide of the top angle of Danny Mountcastle’s goal.

As Brigg began to settle down, they took the lead after thirteen minutes of play from a free-kick outside the area. Chas Fisher began the move with a strong header down the wing but Scott Phillips was fouled just outside the penalty area. Alfie Usher smashed a great shot past the defensive wall into the corner of Danny Mountcastle’s goal.

Teversal replied with Max Gee forcing a save from Miles Fenty and then Brigg defended well to recover the ball in the next attack.

After being caught offside in a couple of slick moves, Brigg scored a second goal in the thirty-fifth minute. Dayle Hutson’s shot from outside the area rebounded from the foot of the goal post but Andy Taylor reacted to strike the ball into the corner of the net.

Now displaying the confidence of a two-goal lead, Scott Phillips won a left-wing corner, which was headed past the top angle of the bar and Dayle Hutson controlled a high bouncing forward pass before winning another corner kick from the other side, which was also headed just wide.

Teversal introduced substitute Elliott Cauldwell into the centre of their defence at the start of the second half but Brigg were the first to show again with a long ball into the area bouncing clear of the goal’s crossbar. Jack Richardson missed out on a chance to increase the score when he got under the ball in front of the goal to strike a right-wing cross high over the bar.

The third goal was scored in the seventy-seventh minute, again as the result of a free kick on the right outside the penalty area. Alfie Usher drove his shot into the roof of the net. With five minutes of play remaining, substitute Leigh Hutchinson was on the end of a cross played in from the left-wing, initiated from a throw-in from Brigg’s half, to complete the scoring.

In the closing minutes, Alfie Usher missed the opportunity of achieving his hat-trick when he was on hand to strike another cross from the right-wing over the home team’s crossbar.

This latest win puts the team in a comfortable position in the league and the clean sheet is much welcomed. However, the next two games are at home and should give further indication of the progress being made in these early games of this season.
