Brigg Town FC CIC 7-0 Nostell Miners Welfare

A crowd of more than three hundred spectators turned out to watch Brigg take on Wakefield-based Nostell Miners Welfare in a League fixture on Saturday afternoon and witnessed a performance to send them all home happy.

Brigg were still without key players in their starting line-up but began the game with an attack down the left-wing, which ended with a shot from Alfie Usher going past the upright. Then Steve McCarron found Dayle Hutson free in space on the right and he struck a vicious shot at goal which opposing ‘keeper Lloyd Allinson turned past his near post.

Continuing to press, Miles Fenty delivered a long free kick into the Nostell penalty area but Lloyd Allinson held on to it safely. When Nostell broke quickly out of defence to attack, a snap shot from the edge of the penalty area by Danny Edwards flew past the upright post.

Brigg’s injury list continued when Owen Vincent had to be substituted due to a leg injury.

Chas Fisher made a strong forward run and found Andy Taylor running at goal but the ball stuck under his feet before Chas Fisher retrieved it to send another shot wide of the top angle of the goal. Good defending by Finlay O’Sullivan prevented Joe Wood from getting a clean strike inside the penalty area.

Brigg began to dominate possession of the ball and after twenty minutes, Steve McCarron received a throw-in from the left before spinning around to hit a thirty-yard drive past the post.

The first goal was scored in the thirtieth minute from a well-worked flowing move down the left wing which ended with Dayle Hutson receiving the final pass inside the area before finding the far top corner of the net. This was followed by a further trio of goals before half-time starting with the first from Scott Phillips after an inter-passing movement between Steve McCarron and Alfie Usher. Scott Phillips had a simple tap in for Brigg’s third goal after

Lloyd Allinson parried a fierce drive from Alfie Usher and the first half scoring spree was completed a minute before the half-time whistle when Andy Taylor won the race to a free kick which Alfie Usher had initially aimed to the far right goal post.

Brigg continued to search for more goals in the second half and following a neat back heeler by Scott Phillips inside the penalty area, the ball was played across the face of the Nostell goal for Andy Taylor and Dayle Hutson to find the bottom of the net, this coming after fifty minutes of play. Steve McCarron headed the ball from a free kick towards the top angle but Lloyd Allinson pushed it round the post. Andy Taylor raced clear straight down the middle of the Nostell defence but with the goalkeeper narrowing the shooting angle, his effort ran wide just past the post.

In frustration, Nostell had a player sent off by the referee after an hour of play. From the free kick arising from this incident, Scott Phillips drove the ball past the top angle of the goal. In the next attack, Dayle Hutson raced clear of a retreating defence before finding the top corner of the net again for his hat-trick.

Nostell continued to show some spirit and were unlucky when an overhead kick from Danny Edwards after sixty-three minutes hit the top of Miles Fenty’s crossbar and Brett Smith’s follow up was saved.

Scott Phillips completed a well-deserved hat-trick in the seventieth minute after working his way past his close marker before smashing the ball into the roof of the net from fifteen yards out. Alfie Usher had a shot smothered on the goal line by Lloyd Allinson and Chas Fisher’s header from a left-wing corner kick was deflected past the upright but Brigg ran out as convincing winners to this testing match.

Next week, Cammell Laird are the visitors for the F.A. Vase First Round Qualifying game, which should attract another bumper crowd to support the team.
