After three weeks without a competitive game, Brigg returned to league action with a home fixture against Sheffield-based Swallownest.

The visitors were successful during the week, securing a win against Glasshoughton and were well-prepared for this game at the EC Surfacing Stadium.

Brigg began the game strongly with a first-minute attack down the left wing from which Alfie Usher met the deep cross into the penalty area at the far post with his volley going wide of the goal.

Swallownest responded with their first attack also down the left wing but the final ball went right across the goal area without any further danger.

Martin Pembleton and Prince Haywood then combined neatly before the latter turned to strike a shot past the upright post.

After seven minutes, Brigg had the ball in the back of their opponents’ goal when Brett Agnew challenged the goalkeeper’s clearance but a free kick was awarded for a handball decision against him.

The game became quite scrappy at both ends of the pitch and very stop-start with petty free kicks being continually awarded.

As half time approached, there was little change in the play and the two teams went in at the break goalless with few opportunities created.

The second half saw little improvement by either team but Brigg continued to enjoy most possession of the ball without being able to break down some stubborn defending.

A free kick by Martin Pembleton after a foul on Brett Agnew just outside the penalty area was struck over the crossbar and then the visiting ‘keeper held on to right-wing strikes aimed at his goal.

The only goal of the game came a minute before the hour mark when Ben Vasquez followed up on a blocked free kick to drive the ball into the bottom of the net from fifteen yards out.

Complaints by the opponents led to a Swallownest midfielder being sin-binned and Brigg settled down better to enjoy their best period of the half, although play was continually being interrupted by petty free kicks.

Agnew went close again to increasing the lead and Scott Hutchinson blazed a late chance wide.

Not a great performance but a clean sheet and three points won were welcome. The next game is on Saturday away at Wombwell who have had an impressive season to date.
