Brigg faced Premier League team Hallam at home in the second round of the League Cup.

After Hallam’s opening attacks were defended, the Zebras first scoring opportunity fell to Scott Hutchinson but his shot at goal went just wide. When Hallam responded, Lewis Hill held on positively to a high cross from the right wing.

After seventeen minutes Hutchinson raced clear of the visitors’ defence to send another strike inches wide. Brigg began to play with confidence on the ball and enjoyed long periods of possession.

Brett Agnew set up another chance but the Hallam goalkeeper saved well.

However, the first goal of the game was scored by the opposition after twenty-six minutes from the penalty spot after a foul just inside the penalty area by Jack Boswell. Former Brigg player Danny Buttle converted the spot kick with a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Despite the setback of going a goal down, Brigg continued to enjoy plenty of possession for the last fifteen minutes of the first half and strikes from Martin Pembleton and Brett Agnew went close to levelling the scoreline.

As half time approached, Hallam also created a couple of chances arising from free kicks but Hill was positive in his handling behind a firm defence to keep the visitor’s lead to a single goal.

The second half began with a decent opening attack by Brigg. After the ball was hurriedly cleared away from the area, it was played back in for Agnew to have a strike at goal but the Hallam ‘keeper made a low save.

Hill made another fine save at the other end of the pitch to keep the home team in the game by turning a fierce shot around the goalpost and then holding on to the resulting corner kick.

The game was providing high entertainment for the crowd with both teams creating clear openings. Martin Pembleton had a strike at goal which hit the crossbar and bounced clear and Hill continued to show great confidence in goal.

As the game moved into added time, Brigg’s final forward push was rewarded with an equalising goal. It came after a left-wing attack from which the ball was played into the penalty area for Reagan Waud to drive it into the back of the net from fifteen yards out.

With the scores level after ninety minutes, the game was decided on penalty kicks. Hill saved the second Hallam spot kick and then, with Brigg converting all their penalties, Hallam’s fourth effort was blasted wide of the goal to give the Zebras a well-deserved win.
