Brigg Town FC CIC 2-1 Rossington Main

A late goal from Scott Phillips resulted from a delightful passing movement to earn Brigg all three points from a highly competitive game played in difficult windy conditions on a saturated surface.

The home team began the game with two right-wing corner kicks in the opening couple of minutes but goalkeeper Kian Johnson confidently held on to the first and then the second was cleared. After a goalmouth scramble in Kian Johnson’s area, Rossington broke quickly up the pitch but Bailey Conway was fouled by Jack Richardson, earning a free kick outside the penalty area which was well defended.

The opening goal was scored after twenty-two minutes of play and followed a left-wing attack from which the ball was switched across the face of the goal before Jack Richardson found space in the crowded penalty area to fire it into the back of the net.

In the next attack, Scott Phillips was just short of getting his foot to the ball from a left-wing cross. Then Martin Pembleton’s strike at goal was comfortably saved by Kian Johnson. With halftime approaching, Jack Bowskin was substituted due to an injury sustained from a tackle on Will Monteiro, who also had to go off to be replaced with Myron Gibbons.

The half time interval came with the home team leading by the single goal.

The second half began with a long-range shot from Jack Richardson going wide of the target. Ten minutes into the half, Main broke down the right-wing and perseverance by Myron Gibbons won a corner kick. A firm header from Gregory Young found the back of the net to put the visitors level and increase their confidence.

Play was end to end but a good opportunity arose for Scott Phillips to get on the score sheet after he was played clear down the middle of the pitch. His attempt to chip the ball over the advancing Kian Johnson almost succeeded but the goalkeeper managed to get his fingertips to prevent it from reaching the goal. Dayle Hutson and Alfie Usher were introduced and began to penetrate down the two wings.

After seventy-five minutes, the referee awarded a penalty kick for Brigg when Scott Phillips went down in the area following a sharp turn but after consultation with his assistant, the decision was changed and the penalty was disallowed.

Both teams pushed for a winning goal but it was Brigg who succeeded with the best move of the game coming four minutes from time. Beginning down the right-wing with Dayle Hutson, the ball was switched across the pitch to Alfie Usher who then beat his defender before chipping the ball accurately across the face of the goal for Scott Phillips to head home the winner.

The win maintains Brigg’s pressure on the League’s leading teams but they face another testing home game ahead mid-week against Retford FC.
