Brigg Town FC CIC 2-1 Swallownest

Brigg saw off a determined 10-man Swallownest in Saturday's home league tie.

Early on, Jack Richardson attempted to catch the goalkeeper out with a long shot from the halfway line but the ball carried over the crossbar. The first threat from Swallownest came from a long ball forward, with the alert Tom Collins clearing from the feet of Oliver McQuillin.

Josh Batty checked his stride before getting a shot at goal which goalkeeper Zac Walker turned round the post for a corner which was headed over by James Petronzio.

Play was fairly even with few chances at either end but Conner Williamson seized the ball from a short corner to try a shot which was deflected wide of Brigg’s goal.

Brigg took the lead from the penalty spot on thirty-three minutes after Harvey Carew was brought down in the box by goalkeeper Walker, who was subsequently red-carded. Scott Phillips calmly netted the spot kick past the substitute keeper.

Having taken the lead, Brigg settled into some better play with Batty forcing two saves and pulling another shot wide. Claims for a second penalty kick were rejected and the half-time whistle saw Brigg leading by the single goal.

Swallownest reorganised to play with commendable grit in the second half and proved to be difficult opposition to break down.

However, the introduction of Martin Pembleton and Alfie Usher saw more constructive play from Brigg and they increased their lead after sixty-eight minutes with the best passing move of the game, ending with Batty driving the ball home from ten yards out.

With Brigg pushing to add to their score, the Swallownest substitute goalkeeper made a fine save to tip a snapshot onto the post and out of play to keep his team in the match.

Ten minutes from time, Swallownest counter-attacked down the left wing and were awarded a penalty for a foul just inside the area, which Liam Frost duly converted.

The home team responded with an attack leading to a goal-line clearance and later Pembleton’s goal-bound shot from a long ball was tipped over the bar.

Brigg saw the game out without further incident to gain three more points to maintain a play-off position in the league.

Next Saturday Brigg are at home to face Cheadle Town for their fourth game in this season’s F.A. Vase competition.
