A point well-earned at the EC Surfacing Stadium with a draw against top-of-the-table Wakefield AFC.

Brigg started the game with an attack down the right wing but the ball was cleared before any further advance was made into the penalty area.

The Falcons responded with two free kicks but both were cleared from the goal area. Wakefield goalkeeper George Bristol then made a comfortable save from a strike by Dean McCarthy to set up another attack which resulted in a corner kick on the right. The ball went loose inside the Brigg penalty area and fell to Ben Gelder who struck a firm shot into the back of the net to give Wakefield an eleventh-minute lead.

After another free kick by Luke Mascall was sent over the crossbar.

A dangerous attack set up by Wakefield midfielder Jack Durkin almost created a second goal, but Lewis Hill did well to tip the ball over his crossbar.

Jack Boswell made a penetrating forward run to find McCarthy inside the penalty area, who turned neatly to strike the ball wide of the visitor’s post.

Brigg continued to press forward and enjoyed a twenty-minute spell of possession with further efforts from Steve McCarron and Mascall being well-defended.

Brigg’s equaliser came after thirty-five minutes when Prince Haywood made a run from midfield to strike a low, firm drive which Bristol could only deflect into the path of Luke Mascall to slot home.

Encouraged by this success, Brigg took the lead in the last minute of the first half when McCarthy met a left-wing corner to head home from close range.

Before the half time whistle, Haywood won the ball again in midfield and forced a save from the Falcons’ keeper.

Wakefield began to get more possession in the second half of the game but Brigg defended well and looked capable of increasing their slender lead.

Haywood sustained an injury after an hour of play and had to be substituted shortly after the influential Steve McCarron had also left the field.

Wakefield continued to press and exert pressure in the closing quarter of the game. The equalising goal came after seventy minutes of play when Slater Barnes won the ball in midfield and struck a fine dipping shot into the corner of Hill’s goal from outside the penalty area.

From then on, Wakefield applied ever more pressure on a tiring Brigg defence but they were unable to create any clear-cut chances and with eight added minutes of play, Brigg continued to work hard to secure a point.

With a depleted squad of players, this was an excellent all-round team performance with plenty of positives to take away.
