In the opening minute the ball was played with pace down the left wing before being crossed into the goal area from where it was cleared confidently further up the pitch. A free-kick from Martin Pembleton mid-way into the Selby half was safely held by goalkeeper Dylan Parkin and then Kain Rogerson got past Luke Mascall before striking a shot across the face of Brigg’s goal. Harry Clapham showed his skills with a first-time shot from just outside the penalty area going just over the crossbar.
Another free-kick from Martin Pembleton was met with a powerful header by Scott Phillips but this was tipped onto the crossbar by Dylan Parkin and rebounded to safety. Harry Clapham made another telling run into the penalty area before delivering a dangerous cross which was cleared by Ben Cousins’ interception.
Selby created an opportunity to take the lead after twenty minutes when Miles Fenty was forced into a low diving save at the feet of Liam Flanagan and forced the ball out for a corner kick at the second attempt. Brigg replied with two quick attacks, both resulting in good saves by Dylan Parkin from Martin Pembleton’s testing shots.
With play repeatedly switching end to end in the second period of the first half, Liam Flanagan turned sharply to strike the ball past the top angle of the Brigg goal, immediately provoking a response from a Scott Phillips’ header after a free-kick into the goal area had been awarded for a foul on Jack Richardson. Harry Clapham was played clear of the home defenders again but Miles Fenty timed his dive to save well.
The opening goal was scored two minutes from the half-time whistle when Selby mounted yet another attack down the left wing. When the ball was played across the goal area, Harry Clapham met it with a firm diving header into the back of the net. In the last move of the first half, a clear opportunity to increase the score was prevented by Miles Fenty’s save off Liam Flanagan’s effort from an in-swinging corner kick.

Despite all the action at both ends of the pitch, the score at halftime gave the visitors a single goal lead but the second half was very different with six of the best to share. Selby went close again in the opening minutes with a shot from Charlie Clamp over the bar. Ryan Gothard needed attention after being hit from close on by Martin Pemberton’s strike.
Ten minutes into the half Selby scored a second goal when Harry Clapham’s pace took him clear of the defence before finding the back of the net. Three minutes later, the same player repeated the move to complete a fine that trick.
With a three-goal lead, the visitors were well and truly in control but Brigg tried to get back into the game and were awarded a penalty kick after sixty-six minutes arising from a drop ball decision on the edge of the area. Martin Pembleton struck the spot-kick into the roof of the net.
The next goal was going to be important for both teams but unfortunately, Brigg made mistakes in their defence allowing Harry Clapham the opportunity to set up Flynn McNaughton for a fourth goal after seventy-two minutes. Brigg responded well despite a break in play for on-field arguments and Scott Phillips found the net five minutes from time to reduce the arrears.
Two minutes later, Alfie Usher added a third goal to make the added time period of play intense but Selby held on to the three points to take them up the league table placings.
Brigg now face two testing games in the week ahead with a trip to North Ferriby on Tuesday evening followed by a home game against Hallam on Saturday afternoon.
