Despite a promising start to the game during which attacks on the home team goal by Martin Pembleton, Lucas Robinson and Chas Fisher were confidently defended, it was Horbury who scored first from their first attack down the left in the thirteenth minute. Jock Curran was left in space inside the area to receive the ball before finding the back of the net from a short distance out.
Two minutes later, their lead was extended from a corner which was headed into the top corner of Brigg’s net by central defender Declan McGivern.
Full of confidence after their early goals, Horbury pushed forward more and almost grabbed a third goal when a free kick struck the crossbar.
Brigg gradually recovered composure and started to play some decent football and reduced the arrears after half an hour of play when Daniel Trott won the ball at the right of the home penalty area and delivered a cross for Jordan Spencer to score on his debut.
Good work by Martin Pembleton set up another chance immediately after for Prince Haywood but his strike at goal from the edge of the area flew just wide.
Within three more minutes, Brigg were level after Steve McCarron headed home at the back post from Spencer’s cross.
Enjoying their best spell of the game in the last fifteen minutes of the first half, Brigg looked capable of further success but were undone in the last minute before the break when the home team regained the lead. The goal came as a result of another attack down the left wing which enabled Abdul Asamoah to push the ball forward before tapping it off the foot of the post past Lewis Hill to put his team ahead at a critical time.

Play was fairly even in the opening ten minutes of the second half with chances falling at both ends of the pitch. Brigg had strikes from Lewis Robinson, Chas Fisher and Daniel Trott going close but Horbury continued to look more dangerous with quick counter-attacking movement.
The home team scored a fourth goal after sixty-two minutes from the penalty spot, awarded after Peter Winn slipped inside his own penalty area and was penalised for a foul committed against the Horbury substitute he was attempting to dispossess. Leading scorer James Cusworth made no mistake from the spot kick to put the home team back in complete control of the game.
Brigg’s efforts to recover resulted in more space for the eager Horbury attacks and a fifth goal was the result of a free kick awarded against Steve McCarron played into the penalty area for Thomas Brock to find the back of the net seventeen minutes from full time.
Henry Ellis had a shot tipped over the Horbury bar but Brigg’s misery was compounded with another goal late on from Eoin Schofield following more pressure on the Brigg defence and giving the home team a comprehensive victory and three points.
A positive response to this setback will be hoped for when Selby Town visit on Wednesday evening.
