Selby Town 3-4 Brigg Town FC CIC

Brigg did well to recover from their poor start and displayed a high level of team spirit throughout this thoroughly entertaining game.

The home team started the game with a goal inside the first minute when a long ball into space down the middle of the pitch fell for Harry Clapham to find the back of the net from fifteen yards out. Worse was to follow as the second goal was scored just three minutes later. It came from a right-wing attack from which the ball came back of the crossbar for Charlie Clamp to follow up and drive home.

After such a disastrous opening period, Brigg began to settle with composure to play some passing football. They reduced the arrears after thirteen minutes of play when Steve McCarron took possession inside the penalty area to turn his marker and strike a shot at goal from which the ball came back off the foot of the goal post for the alert Scott Phillips to drive it into the bottom of the net.

Clearly encouraged by this, an equalising goal was scored six minutes later coming from the penalty spot. Scott Phillips found space inside the penalty area to go past goalkeeper Thomas Brown but was brought down and duly scored from the spot kick after the goalkeeper was cautioned. The game was turned on its head after twenty-five minutes when Owen Vincent scored another goal for Brigg after a smart left-wing move involving Dayle Hutson.

Unable to hold on to the lead for more than four minutes, Brigg were penalised for a penalty kick against them on the half-hour for Liam Flanagan to level the scoring again. Play was end to end in the closing minutes of the first half with a shot at goal from the Brigg left-wing blocked on the goal line whilst at the other end of the pitch, David Birch was needed to make a low diving save and then a firm header from a left-wing cross flew just over the goalkeeper’s crossbar.

Going into the halftime break with the score level, both teams were soon looking for an advantage in the second period of the game. Selby went close to regaining the lead when a left-wing corner kick was headed against the woodwork of the goal. However, it was Brigg who broke the deadlock after fifty-eight minutes when they won possession of the ball on the right-wing to deliver it into the penalty area for Scott Phillips to complete his hat trick.

The home team pushed further forward and searched for an equaliser with a free kick from the left-wing striking the woodwork of the goal and a low left-wing cross was blocked. Brigg continued to probe for more openings with Steve McCarron and Dayle Hutson both going close. A free kick from Martin Pembleton was driven narrowly over the crossbar and another strike from Scott Phillips went wide.

In the frantic closing minutes of added time, a final surge by the home team resulted in another shot going close and then Lawrence Heward was able to get his head to the ball as it seemed destined for the top corner of the net.

Overall, this was a thoroughly entertaining game for all of the spectators which could have gone either way but Brigg did well to recover from their poor start and displayed a high level of team spirit throughout.
