A single second-half goal secured the win in a tight game against the Ammers at the EC Surfacing Stadium.

From the kick-off, off the Amateurs won an early right wing corner kick but this was comfortably cleared away from the goalmouth area. In the next attack a weak shot from the edge of the area was held by Lewis Hill.

Brigg responded with an attack from their own half of the field progressing from Steve McCarron to Brett Agnew who turned neatly at the edge of the penalty area to get a shot on target but gathered by ‘keeper Jack Viles. Another weak free kick by the Amateurs was wasted and play became scrappy.

The best chance of scoring fell to Dean McCarthy with a firm first-time volley after a deep cross from the left wing. Brett Agnew had another strike at goal from twenty-five yards out and the Amateurs threatened again with a fierce volley to test out Hill, who saved low down.

After half an hour of play, McCarron surged forward to take a long shot at goal but the ball flew over Jack Viles’ crossbar. Jacob Norburn needed treatment for a sustained injury and the team re-organised. Jack Boswell worked space to receive the ball from Luke Mascall inside the penalty area but was wrong-footed to get a firm strike on the ball as it went across the face of the goal.

The half closed with another left wing attack by the visitors ending with the ball over the crossbar but no scoring by either team in an evenly fought match.

Play continued to be slow at the beginning of the second half with neither team creating any real danger.

Dean McCarthy scooped the ball over the crossbar when well placed and Jack Viles did well to make a double save at the foot of his upright post.

The Amateurs’ response was down their left wing but the home defenders looked solid and competent to manage any danger as the ball was played out for a corner kick on the opposite side of the pitch.

Brigg opened the scoring in the sixty-fifth minute as a result of a free kick just over the halfway line. McCarron struck the ball to test out Viles but the Ammers keeper couldn’t hold on as the ball came off him and the Brigg strikers were first to react with McCarthy able to squeeze the ball into the back of the net from an acute angle.

Brigg introduced their substitutes and played out the last twenty minutes with confidence but aware that their slender lead needed to be protected.

The three points consolidates their mid-table position and, importantly, extends their recent unbeaten run of games.
