Brigg Town FC CIC 1-3 Emley AFC

Brigg included Prince Haywood, Martin Pembleton, Jack Cross and Jack Follows in their starting line up for their FA Vase Second Round Qualifying game against Emley.

Emley started the match confidently and showed their ability to break quickly from defence to attack. Miles Fenty was out of his goal to collect the ball from a forward move in the first minute and followed this up by safely holding on to a free kick from Ross Hardaker.

Brigg’s first attack came from a left-wing move which ended with Emley’s keeper Declan Lambton making a comfortable save.

Emley continued to enjoy most of the possession in the opening quarter of the game with further strikes at goal from James Walshaw and Tom Hagan going close but the home defence looked solid with Fenty in good form.

In response, Luke Mascall was busy in midfield and his run at the Emley defence was only halted by a foul committed outside the penalty area

The opening goal of the game was scored by the visitors after half an hour of play and came from a left-wing cross by Nathan Curtis to the far post for Samuel Pashley to head the ball into the top corner of the net.

Brigg reacted positively and equalised in the next minute when Jack Cross followed up on a blocked shot to drive the ball into the back of the net.

Back on level terms, Brigg enjoyed more of the ball with increasing confidence for the next fifteen minutes but were caught out in added time at the end of the half when Walshaw turned neatly inside the penalty area past two defenders before finding the net with a left-footed shot to put his team in front at the break.

Emley continued to enjoy periods of possession throughout the second half but the home team played well to prevent any clear openings with Fenty continuing to handle comfortably with long balls being played into his goal area.

Brigg were well into the match and created more of their own opportunities with Cross and Pembleton busy orchestrating play in midfield. Following a left wing break by the visitors which ended with an attempted shot going over the top far angle of the Brigg goal, a counterattack by the home team ended with a firm strike from outside the penalty area on the right being blocked on the goal line.

The third and telling goal for Emley was scored half an hour into the second half following a couple of deep crosses into the area from the right wing. Reuben Jerome was able to take advantage of the second of these to put his team in a more comfortable position given by a two-goal lead.

Brigg pushed forward more in the closing quarter-hour of the game but The Pewits remained in control of the game and Fenty was needed to make another low, diving save before the final whistle.

Emley progress to the next round of the competition but Brigg had played well throughout the ninety minutes of an enjoyable game.
