Brigg Town FC CIC 2-1 Yorkshire Amateur

Yorkshire Amateur were the opponents for Brigg in the First Round of the League Cup. Both teams made a number of changes in their starting line ups.

The first attack came from the home team down the right wing but this was comfortably cleared with a throw-in from an Amateurs’ left wing across the penalty area before the ball spun out of play.

When Brigg attacked again, the ball was cleared from the penalty area and Henry Ellis needed treatment for an injury sustained in a firm challenge.

The visitors threatened with pace down their left wing but the home defence cleared the ball from the goal area. However, they took the lead in the eleventh minute when a free kick wasn’t dealt with properly and fell for Cole Carter to find the corner of Miles Fenty’s goal.

The response from Brigg came with an attack by Dan Trott pushing forward down the right wing to win a corner kick but the ball which was played in was safely held by ‘keeper Adam Wilson.

Brigg then enjoyed a lengthy period of possession but the visitors defended comfortably and well to keep their lead intact. They continued to look capable of more success with left wing attacks and Callum Sallis was kept on the alert.

As half-time approached, the Ammers were unlucky in not scoring a second when Fenty was beaten to a through-ball played into his penalty area and heading for the corner of his net before being kicked clear.

The two teams went into the break with the visitors still holding on comfortably to their single-goal lead.

Brigg introduced new signing Reagan Waud at the start of the second half but he almost immediately received a yellow card for his first tackle in the game. He soon had a chance for a strike at goal but instead opted to cross the ball across the six-yard line.

Amateurs threatened again down their left wing, winning a free kick outside the area, but the ball was deflected over the Brigg crossbar.

Play remained end-to-end without any real chances being created by either team but after seventy-three minutes of play, the referee issued a second caution to Amateurs midfielder Rio Korbel for kicking the ball away resulting in his sending off.

This encouraged the Brigg team to push further forward against the visitors’ ten men and they seized the initiative for the last quarter of the game.

The equalising goal came five minutes from the end of the scheduled ninety. Steve McCarron was at the far post to head a ball played in from a short corner past the out-stretched fingertips of Wilson into the top far corner via the crossbar.

Waud had a great chance to score after receiving the ball with his back to goal via a deflection, but he shot straight into Wilson’s hands.

Then, in the last minute of six added on, Brigg scored the winner when a shot that was parried fell for Reagan Waud, who took the opportunity to drive it into the back of the net.

The match ended with another petty sending-off when Waud received a second caution for delaying a free kick as the final whistle was about to be blown.
