Retford United 5-0 Brigg Town FC CIC

The Zebras suffered a heavy defeat away at Retford United.

The home team were the first to attack when Owen Fieldsend had a shot cleared from the penalty area and then followed up with another effort going past Miles Fenty’s post.

Daniel Trott responded in Brigg’s first attack but the ball was cleared after he pulled it back into the goal area.

Alfie Usher needed treatment for an injury and Retford pushed for an early opening but Fenty made decent saves from Jimmy Eyles and Brandon Kane.

Brigg made progress to win a right-wing corner kick which was played across the face of the home goal.

After wasting a couple of free kicks which were carried into touch by the back wind Brigg conceded the first goal of the game on the half-hour mark. It came from a slick move down the left when Lewis Macaskill took control of the space available to win the ball before side-stepping inside to find the back of the net with a firm shot.

In the next minute, the same player tried his luck again but Jacob Norburn blocked his shot at goal.

Retford continued to dominate the play up to the half-time whistle but long-range efforts from Brandon Kane and Jimmy Eyles were cleared.

With the added advantage of a stiff wind behind them, Retford began the second half strongly, winning a left-wing corner kick which was eventually scrambled away from the goal line.

Continued pressure resulted in the second goal scored in the fifty-fourth minute. There seemed to be little danger when Max Pemberton won control of the ball close to the goal line on the left wing but his chip towards goal floated over the goal area and found the top far corner of the net.

Brigg made a rare attack when Owen Vincent surged forward from midfield down the middle of the pitch but his strike at goal from fifteen yards out went past the post.

The Badger’s third goal was scored on the hour by Mark West after Luke Mascall lost possession for Brigg in midfield, leaving room for the Retford striker to advance freely down the wing before cutting back inside to beat Fenty.

The last half hour of the game saw Retford in complete control with Brigg trying desperately to prevent conceding again but Max Dungworth added his name to the list of scorers after seventy-three minutes and then again five minutes later.

The only other attempt by Brigg at reducing the arrears came from Scott Hutchinson’s run down the left wing but it ended with a shot wide of the target.

The fifth goal ended the scoring and Brigg had demonstrated their loss of confidence and all-round weaknesses.

On Wednesday evening Brigg play Yorkshire Amateur at home in the League Cup and then follow up with their FA Challenge Vase game at home to Emley on Saturday afternoon.
