Brigg Town FC CIC 2-4 Nostell Miners Welfare

Brigg pulled back a two-goal deficit in the first half but eventually lost this mid-week league tie against Nostell Miners.

Brigg began the game with an attack down the right wing from which Daniel Trott won a corner kick but this was kicked clear up the pitch.

Nostell responded with quick movement down the middle leaving the opportunity for a free shot right across the home goal area.

Trott and Ryan Thompson combined well before the latter’s strike was deflected for another corner kick. This was well-defended allowing Nostell to break forward but they overran the ball into touch.

The opening goal was scored by the visitors after eight minutes. A free kick outside the penalty area was delivered to the far post and headed firmly into the top corner by Harvey Booth.

Seven minutes later Jordan Kershaw consolidated the Miners’ lead after running clear of a retreating defence, finding the bottom corner of the net with a crisp low drive.

Brigg reacted to this poor start by scoring their first goal in the twenty-third minute. It came from Brett Agnew after a right-wing corner was initially blocked before falling to the Brigg manager who turned neatly to score from close range.

On the half-hour mark, Brigg were back on level terms. Nostell goalkeeper Rhys Westcarr’s poor clearance fell to Ben Vasquez who teed up Jack Boswell to drive the ball into the back of the net.

The last fifteen minutes of the first half saw chances for both teams to take the lead. Brigg’s Luke Mascall was sin-binned on forty-four minutes but the score remained at two-all at the break.

Nostell began the second half strongly but another goalkeeping error gave Brigg a clear chance to score again.

Ben Vasquez was unlucky to see his deflected shot bounce clear off the inside of the post.

Nostell restored their lead after sixty-five minutes from another set piece. Jack Bull headed the ball firmly into the Brigg net at the far post from a right-wing corner.

Within a minute another fierce shot from Vasquez from outside the penalty area struck the Nostell crossbar before bouncing away clear.

The visitors scored their fourth goal after seventy minutes of play when a long free kick was worked to the left wing before being switched inside for Jordan Kershaw to drive it into the corner of the net.

Having regained the two-goal advantage, Nostell took control of the game for the remaining twenty minutes.

Miles Fenty was called on to make a brilliant save from Liam Ormsby but was subsequently sin-binned for dissent, meaning James Petronzio had to don the gloves to see out the game.

A disappointing result once again for the Zebras, who travel to Retford United on Saturday.
