The home team was the first to threaten with an attack down the left wing progressing to the edge of the penalty area but the strike at goal was hurried and well over the Brigg goal.
The immediate response came from a free kick awarded on the right wing but there was too much pace on the ball played into the crowded goal area and it was headed wide. Lewis Hill was alert to come out to the edge of his goal area to make the next clearance and followed this up with another couple of comfortable saves.
Brigg settled down well to start passing the ball around and were rewarded with the opening goal of the game in the ninth minute of play when it was pulled back from the left wing into the penalty area for Dean McCarthy to drive it firmly into the back of the net.
Prince Haywood worked the ball well down the left wing but his advance on goal was well defended while at the other end of the pitch a long delivery into the penalty area was headed over the cross bar.
Brigg scored again after eighteen minutes with Jack Boswell in the right place to tap the ball into the back of the net after some neat inter-passing play.
The two goal lead allowed Brigg to dominate the play for the rest of the first half with strikes from Haywood and Jordan Spencer going close to further increasing the scoreline.
Hill was needed to deal with the home team’s counter attacks twice after the ball was given away cheaply in midfield but the two teams went into the half time break with Brigg able to hold on to their two goal advantage.

Rail began the second half well with more positive aggression and they were able to reduce the arrears after just a further four minutes of play. The goal came from a set-piece; a left-wing corner kick which was met by Fin Darvill who headed the ball into the roof of the net.
Brigg‘s response was to mount another left-wing attack from which Scott Hutchinson struck the ball across the full face of the goal.
The home team were reduced to ten players after a foul against Jack Boswell and Brigg continued to press for more goals but found the home team defending solidly.
Then Brigg were also reduced to ten men after Prince Haywood was shown a red card for what appeared to be a firm but fair tackle, contentiously awarded after consultation between the referee and his pressurised assistant.
Brigg continued to look comfortable with their one-goal advantage as the game moved into nine minutes of added time but the Harrogate continued to search for an equaliser. It came in the very last attack of the game when Mike Morris forced the ball into the bottom corner of the net after it had been played into the goalmouth area from the right wing.
